Esta es la primera traducción al inglés del libro de Émile Rocher sobre la Rebelión Panthay. Publicado originalmente en 1879 como La Province chinoise du Yunnan, es un valioso testimonio de primera mano sobre Yunnan a mediados del siglo XIX, con un enfoque particular en la Rebelión Panthay (1856-1873), un importante levantamiento del pueblo musulmán Hui contra la dinastía Qing.
Rocher fue un diplomático y viajero francés que pasó tiempo en Yunnan y ofreció una perspectiva externa sobre la rebelión y sus consecuencias. Su libro destaca especialmente por sus descripciones de las complejidades políticas, sociales y étnicas de Yunnan, así como por sus observaciones geográficas y culturales.
El segundo volumen de su obra, cuya mayor parte se traduce aquí, cubre extensamente la Rebelión Panthay, describiendo el auge y la caída del efímero sultanato de Dali, la brutal represión de los rebeldes por parte de las fuerzas Qing y el impacto devastador sobre la población local.
